Before I begin a service, one of the most common concerns spoken of in my chair is dandruff or an itchy scalp. As unpleasant as itchy scalps can be, they are not always caused by serious illnesses and can be treated with over-the-counter products. Let’s discuss some of the basic causes of a flaking, dry itchy scalp and get into some shampoos that can help.

What Causes an Itchy Scalp?

Let me pose this question. How many of us knew that there are several causes of dandruff and itchy scalps? To begin, some causes can begin with your environment or climate. Typically, those colder climates, in most cases, cause our scalps to become a bit more dryer, which will lead to dandruff and even shedding.

The wrong hair routine can be another reason. First, overwashing your hair and stripping the scalp of natural oils can be an important factor causing dry scalp issues. Also, using lots of hair products, especially oil-based ones, require a deeper cleanse of clogged pores. If you do not address this cause, you will likely need to treat your itchy scalp soon.

In general, I would call the usage of oil-based products one of the most widespread causes of dandruff and itchy scalp now. The situation is getting worse with “growth oils” becoming a trend and promising magical results. As a master hairstylist and trichologist who sees oily and itchy scalps daily, I would recommend buying such with great caution. In most cases, everything they do is just clog the pores and cause a build-up on the scalp.

Note that some of the causes are rooted not externally, but internally. Always remember: when our scalps are going through a change and you’re starting to see dryness or flaking, this can be a red flag that something is going on internally in the body. Stress, medication, poor diet or sudden diet changes, and poor water intake can all worsen our skin conditions.

Of course, proper consultation with a hair care professional, dermatologist or trichologist can help you better diagnose and treat this concern. However, great at-home itchy scalp care is highly recommended. Read on for the best shampoos that relieve itchy scalps that are both safe and effective.

What Is the Best Shampoo for Itchy Scalp?

Here are some of the best scalp treatment shampoos I recommend using to treat itchy flaky scalp:

1. Straight Request Black Carbon 500

I would call this product my first love! This product has an impressive list of great ingredients like Carbon-activated charcoal, coconut oil, tea tree oil, lemongrass oil, peppermint oil, silk protein, argan oil, coal tar, and apple cider vinegar. This sulfate-free shampoo gives a gentle repairing cleanse and is good for both itchy flaky scalps and dandruff.

2. Misani Scalp Care Shampoo & Conditioner

I would call this system my second love! This anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner definitely contain a significant amount of ingredients that aid in treating dandruff and itchy scalps such as salicylic acid, turmeric and peppermint oil, glycerin, and even pyrithione zinc.

4. KeraCare Dry & Itchy Scalp Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

This product is amazing and FEELS amazing. Its key ingredient like in other quality anti-dandruff shampoos is zinc pyrithione, which is an important ingredient when dealing with an itchy scalp and dandruff. This haircare line also has other stylers outside of shampoo and conditioner that help with dryness and itchy scalp too.

5. Essations Tea Tree Solutions Dry & Itchy Scalp Shampoo

I call this product “ICE” because that is what your scalp will feel like primarily. This is due to the shampoo’s active ingredients, which are not just tea tree, but menthol as well. Both play a huge role in relieving a dry itchy scalp, dandruff, and flaking. Besides, it is a great black-owned hair care brand to support.

When It’s Time to Worry About Scalp Itchiness

Although itchy scalp shampoos can effectively tackle the most common cases, please mind that itchy scalp can be caused by some serious illnesses and conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, AD, and neuropathy.

While shampoos can still be part of the treatment, consistency and product choices are key, so a professional consultation is required. If scalp itchiness becomes persistent and is hard to soothe, you notice inflamed skin patches, or experience scalp irritation, consult a specialist as soon as possible.
